AIR Force has a new expedition-
ary imagery capability -- Air Force
Imagery Specialists (AFIS) -- thanks
to a revamp of the former photographic
The new AFIS capability will use
personnel from the existing mustering to
continue to support base requirements,
with an increased role of public affairs
and community engagement.
Under the management of 28SQN,
AFIS personnel are based at Air Force
Imagery Detachments (AFIDs) at
RAAF Bases Amberley, Williamtown,
Richmond, Edinburgh and the Air Force
Strategic Imagery Centre (AFSIC) in
Under the Strategic Reform
Program, the AFIDs will be supported
by APS imagery specialists at each loca-
tion.AFIS support includes coverage of
operations, exercises, events and activi-
ties which contribute to Defence and Air
Force strategic messaging objectives, as
well as support to bases with no extant
capability, such as RAAF Bases Pearce,
Tindal, Townsville and Wagga.
AFIS Flight Commander SQNLDR
Trevor Grant said the concept provided
a one-stop-shop imagery capability that
continued to support all base require-
ments on a priority level while helping
to shape and influence public sentiment.
"AFIS will continue to be responsive
to all the domestic and tactical level
imagery demands previously within
the photographer's area of responsibil-
ity, including engineering, defects,
investigative, identification, portraiture,
historic, public affairs and any other
request for imagery support, along with
providing technical advice and training
to units," he said.
"However, this new capability will
also be more strategically focused to
complement Air Force objectives.
"Imagery plays a big part in print
and online media and Air Force is lead-
ing the way, moving more and more into
this area through better use of the skills
of imagery and web specialists."
The capability will also offer Air
Force a professional broadcast video
production unit, based in Canberra,
capable of delivering broadcast-quality
productions for corporate productions,
news-style production, senior leadership
messages, and advice and support on
any video production.
