THE special role and sacrifices made by the
families of deployed ADF personnel will be
recognised by the award of a new pin.
The pin will be available and released later
Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Defence
Science and Personnel Minister Warren
Snowdon made the announcement on April
23. Ms Gillard said the pin was intended to
recognise the special role that family members
take on when military personnel serve abroad.
"This new pin will be for these fam-
ily members across Navy, Army and the Air
Force who go for stretches without their loved
ones, often under anxious circumstance know-
ing their loved one is deployed in a dangerous
conflict zone," Ms Gillard said.
She said ADF members made a brave and
honourable contribution to the nation when
they served overseas.
"But their sons, daughters, partners and
parents also make a significant sacrifice, too."
Mr Snowdon said Defence would work on
the pin's design with family support organisa-
tions, including Defence Families Australia.
"It's important the design and look of the
pin appropriately reflect its purpose and we
will be making sure families have the oppor-
tunity to provide input into its design," Mr
"While some community and ADF organi-
sations have individual badges or medals, no
universal pin of recognition across the forces
has previously existed."
DEFENCE and the Department of
Veterans' Affairs (DVA) are well on the
way to improving the support system
for wounded, injured or ill members in
That was a key message from a
report released on April 23 on the review
of current practices for the Support for
Injured or Ill Project (SIIP).
The review was initiated by Defence
to develop a seamless and integrated
support process for injured or ill person-

Gerard Fogarty said Defence was com-
mitted to caring for personnel, especial-
ly if they were wounded, injured, or ill.
"The report concluded that the cur-
rent system is generally good, and
results indicate a high return to work
rate for rehabilitated ADF members. It
also recommends that outcomes would
be improved through a more coordinated
and integrated approach to health care
and support," he said.
"Our close involvement with DVA is
essential to the development of a seam-
less and integrated system."
Defence and DVA have started a sec-
ond phase of work to continue improv-
ing the system.
Renamed the Support for Wounded,
Injured or Ill Program (SWIIP) to rec-
ognise those wounded during combat
operations, it aims to deliver consistent
support to all wounded, injured or ill
personnel during their service and after
transition from the ADF.
Work to implement the 31 recom-
mendations from the review is under
way and much of the work is expected
to be completed this year.
A key SWIIP initiative is the On
Base Advisory Service (OBAS), placing
specially trained DVA staff at more than
"This initiative will not only assist
those leaving the ADF, but it ensures
current serving members understand and
are informed about the support and ser-
vices they may be eligible to receive,
including health services, rehabilitation,
compensation and income support,"
MAJGEN Fogarty said.

opened at Army bases in Townsville
and Darwin, with a third on its way in
