FLOOD ASSIST 7
AB Melanie Schinkel
ABOUT 130 airmen and soldiers in-
volved in Operation Queensland Flood
Assist put their brooms, squeegees and
helping hands to good use at a flood-
damaged Woolworths supermarket and
childcare centre in Goodna on January
16. The Amberley component of the
joint task force is comprised of air-
men and soldiers from 1 and 2 Airfield
Defence Squadrons, 9th Force Support
Battalion and 21st Construction
Regiment. They have been working
around the Ipswich Shire suburbs of
Redbank Plains and Goodna.
AC Brendan Hoey from 1AFDS said
he helped clear out perished groceries
from the supermarket.
"It was just a big stinky mess inside
there, so that's why we had to wear
masks," he said.
LAC Ashton Knight from 1AFDS
said the flood waters only missed his
house by about six metres.
"I was lucky, but some of my close
friends and family weren't. The soon-
er we get all this mess cleaned up [in
Goodna], the sooner we can all move on
with our lives," he said.
FSGT Paul Bowler from RAAF
Base Amberley's RAAF Security and
Fire School said that the flood water
reached two metres inside Goodna's
"Bobcats were removing all the per-
ished stock before we came through
with squeegees," he said.
"We got rid of all the obvious haz-
ards and tried to make the environment
hygienic for when the demolitions
crews came through later.
"Goodna is a local area for
Amberley personnel, so it felt good to
help out where we could. Because we're
a fire training flight, this was also an
excellent opportunity to practise all the
skills we've learnt over the years."
After helping to clean up the super-
market, the Amberley personnel then
helped hose out the local childcare cen-
tre, which had been ruined by flood
Following this task, the joint task-
force expected to continue hosing,
cleaning and stripping out more build-
ings in the area.
"We'll just keep chugging along for
as long as it takes to get Goodna back to
the way it was," FSGT Bowler said.
