THE festive season is not usually
a good time for girths, as phys-
ical activity takes a back seat
to eating, drinking and being
merry. To salvage your hard-won fitness,
a plan of action is needed.
Christmas works on two fronts in shift-
ing the balance of energy intake versus
output. Apart from having to store a calorie
surplus, the body, in the absence of exer-
cise, can lose about 1 per cent of fitness a
day over a month.
If your New Year resolution is to get
fitter/faster/stronger, you may find it takes
several weeks, if not months, to regain pre-
Christmas fitness levels.
It is unrealistic to expect you to increase
your training regime over the stand-down
period, but the SWEAT principle might
help you keep healthy.
Switch off: Set aside 30 minutes a
day for no-electronics playtime. That is,
turn off the TV and video games and play

Don't keep junk food around (if you really
want it, you'll have to walk to the shops).
